Overview

Darryl McCray, known as Cornbread, was born in Philadelphia in 1953 and is credited with being the first modern graffiti writer. The name came from a childhood nickname earned at the Youth Development Center, where he persuaded the kitchen to make cornbread; he began writing it on the walls of North Philadelphia in the mid-1960s, several years before the practice appeared in New York.

What he invented was not a style but a proposition: that a name, written repeatedly across a city by someone with no other means of being heard, constitutes a form of address. He wrote to be seen — famously on an elephant at the Philadelphia Zoo and on the Jackson Five's private jet — and the logic of that, repetition as a claim on public space, is the logic every writer since has worked within. By 1971 the practice had reached New York, where TAKI 183 attracted the attention of the New York Times, and from there it spread worldwide.

His written form is plain and declarative, close to signature and unconcerned with the elaboration that later generations built on top of it. That directness is now read as historically significant rather than as a limitation: it is the form at its origin, before style became the medium of competition.

Cornbread stopped writing in the 1970s and has since worked as a public speaker and youth advocate, and with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program — an organisation founded expressly to redirect the practice he started. His return to making work has been recent and deliberate.

His first significant exhibition was Start This / Cornbread the Legend, a solo presentation at the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam in 2021, and Cornbread: Legendary opened at Paradigm Gallery + Studio in Philadelphia in 2026. His exhibition record is short by design and by circumstance; his position in the history of the form does not depend on it.
